Activity 1: Compose Meaningful Sentences
Teaching students to write Meaningful Sentences has hands down been the most effective way for my students to make connections with vocabulary words in ELA, math, science, and social studies. In a meaningful sentence, students must use the vocabulary word and a synonym in the same sentence. (See sample above.) I have included an Instructional Teacher Video in this resource that shows how to introduce and scaffold students with this editable vocabulary activity. Meaningful sentence templates are also a great Word Work activity.
Implementing effective vocabulary strategies such as composing meaningful sentences, directly leads to improvement in reading comprehension. I have used this tried and true strategy for the past 23 years and when implemented correctly, is GUARANTEED SUCCESS!
Tips:
- Have students form a compound sentence with the vocabulary word on one side and the synonym on the other, joined together with a conjunction.
- Always write or type the focus word and the synonym in a different color. Be sure to have students underline the focus word and circle the synonym. (This forces them to use both.)
- To set clear expectations, I illustrate this skill using a “see saw” with the conjunction at the fulcrum (middle) and the two independent sentences on each side. This visually cements understanding, especially for struggling writers.
- For students who still find writing a meaningful sentence a challenge, I create the first part of the sentence with the vocabulary word, and have them complete the compound sentence using a synonym in the second part of the sentence.
